More Information About the Program
Stanford has a uniquely integrated six-year program in plastic surgery. During these six years, you will have the opportunity to spend a considerable amount of time in the pursuit of plastic surgical knowledge and excellence. The faculty at Stanford is all full-time and all have a commitment to academic excellence.
The purpose of the next six years is to broadly educate you so that you not only become experts in the numerous facets of our specialty but also become world leaders in at least one and, hopefully, several areas of the specialty. Although mastering of the literature and technical expertise are required to achieve this, so too is the drive for academic pursuits, including research and publication. Individuals selecting our program are committing themselves to these pursuits. The prerequisite for completion of the program is presentation at a national, state, or chief residents' conference before or during their last year of residency. In addition, it is expected that you will start this type of work in your third and fourth years of the program so as to be able to make contributions to our specialty.
We hope that those of you who have a strong desire to achieve a high-level, academic plastic surgery education will choose the Stanford Plastic Surgery Program for your training. The following information will answer most of your questions about the program.
The entire six-year plastic surgery training takes place in a group of affiliated hospitals in the Stanford area. Each affiliate hospital is staffed with its own complete division of plastic surgery staff and full-time faculty members. These hospitals, in addition to Stanford Hospital and Clinics, are the Veterans Administration Health Care System, the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Santa Clara Kaiser Hospital, and Davies Medical Center. Our residents, both during the general surgery training and plastic surgery training, rotate through all of these hospitals.
Application to the Stanford Plastic Surgery Residency Program is only at the internship level. Our program is also a participant of the National Intern and Resident Matching Program (NIRMP). Each year, the Stanford Plastic Surgery Residency Program selects three individuals who have applied for internship positions. These individuals indicated their choice for the Stanford Plastic Surgery Residency Program by using the 182049 category.
