International Medical School Graduates
Canadians
Graduates of Canadian medical schools will be placed on E.C.F.M.G.-sponsored J-1 visas. They are not required to take the qualifying examinations such as FMGEMS, NBME, and USMLE in order to obtain their visas. PLEASE NOTE: At this time, the Canadian government is restricting approval of physicians wishing to obtain clinical training outside Canada . Stanford Hospital & Clinics is unable to obtain a J-1 visa without the consent of the Canadian government.
Applicants from Outside the U.S. and Canada
All trainees in residency and clinical fellowship programs will be placed on E.C.F.M.G.-sponsored J-1 visas. Stanford Hospital & Clinics does not sponsor such trainees for H-1B visas. E.C.F.M.G. requires a valid E.C.F.M.G. certificate obtained by successful completion of their qualifying examinations (VQE, FMGEMS, NBME, or USMLE) coupled with the appropriate English language examination to be eligible for a visa. Allow 120 working days for E.C.F.M.G. to process an initial visa. - For J-1 visas, you must have a letter from the Ministry of Health of your country approving your training in this country and guaranteeing that you will return home and have a position offered to you.
- You must complete one year of ACGME-approved residency training in the United States or Canada . This year must include four months of medicine, or surgery, or GYN/OB, or pediatrics.
- You must complete U.S.M.L.E. Part III.
- As of July 1, 1986 , all Foreign Medical Graduates must have full training in general surgery, i.e., Board Eligible, as determined by the American Board of Surgery, before starting training in Plastic Surgery.
