Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Girod joined the Division of Plastic Surgery at Stanford University as an Assistant Professor. Her major clinical and research interests are functional oral and craniofacial rehabilitation of craniofacial trauma and craniofacial deformities, bone grafting, implantology and oral pathology in children and adults.

She moved from the Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in Erlangen, Germany, where she had a junior faculty position in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department. During her time in Erlangen her major clinical contributions were the introductions of an interdisciplinary clinic for craniofacial deformities and endoscopic TMJ diagnosis and surgery.

She completed her Maxillofacial Surgery training at the University of Cologne with Professor Hans-Dieter Pape from 1992 to 1995. In 1992 she received the prestigious Lise-Meitner-Award of the state of Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany, for outstanding young clinicians and researchers. In cooperation with the technical faculty she started to work on a 3D computer-based planning system for craniofacial surgery. In 1994 her group received the Best Poster Award of the European Association for Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery for the presentation of this work. By now this system allows precise preoperative visualization not only of bony structures but also of covering soft tissues using individual patient data. In 3D Craniofacial Surgery Simulation her group is one of the three most successful groups worldwide.

From 1988 to 1990 she spent two years in the U.S. first as 4th year medical student and after receiving her M.D. as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School in Boston. During her fellowship with Professor Barrett Rollins at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute she initiated a molecular analysis of oncogene and tumor suppressor gene expression in squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. Over the years, her group has made major contributions to the understanding of the role of tumor suppressor genes in oral carcinogenesis. In 1995 she was awarded the Martin-Wassmund-Award of the German Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons for the best Habilitation for her research on "Tumor Suppressor Genes and Cell Proliferation Control in the Carcinogenesis in the Oral Mucosa ".

From 1984 to 1987 Dr. Girod completed a residency in Oral Surgery at Hannover Medical School in Hannover, Germany, under the tutelage of Professor Jarg-Erich Hausamen. Simultaneously, she continued her medical studies to achieve a double degree in dentistry and medicine. She graduated from the Friedrich-Wilhelm-University Dental School in Bonn, Germany, in 1983 and the Hannover Medical School in Hannover, Germany in 1989.
