Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Longaker received his Bachelor of Science degree in physiology at Michigan State University in 1980. He received his M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School in 1984. He served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 1987 and as a Research Fellow in 1991. Dr. Longaker completed his general surgery residency training in the Department of Surgery at UCSF in San Francisco in 1993. He then completed his plastic surgery from 1993 to 1995. From 1995 to 1996 he completed his craniofacial fellowship training in the Department of Surgery at UCLA.

In 1996 Dr. Longaker was appointed the John Marquis Converse Professor of Plastic Surgery Research and Director of Surgical Research in the Department of Surgery at NYU. In 2000 he was appointed as Professor of Surgery and Director of Children's Surgical Research in the Department of Surgery at Stanford University Medical Center.

Dr. Longaker is the recipient of numerous awards and honors such as: Valedictorian at Warren High School in 1976, Member of the NCAA Men's Championship Basketball Team in 1979, Rhodes Scholar National Finalist in 1980, Summa Cum Laude at Michigan State University in 1980, in 1988 and 1989 he was awarded the Young Investigators Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics, in 1991 he was awarded first place by the Plastic Surgery Education Foundation for the Scholarship Contest. He was the recipient of the Peter J. Gingrass Memorial Award by the Plastic Surgery Research Council in 1991 and in 1992 he was awarded Best Research Paper in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery by the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgery and Synthes. Also in 1992 he was the recipient of the Robert H. Ivy Memorial Award by the Pennsylvania Plastic Surgery Society. In 1993, as Co-author, he was given the James Barrett Brown Award by the American Association of Plastic Surgeons for outstanding paper in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The American Cleft Palate/Craniofacial Association awarded him the Best Research Paper in the Junior Investigator Category in 1995. As Co-author, in 1995, he was again awarded the James Barrett Brown Award by the American Association of Plastic Surgeons for Outstanding Paper in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Also in 1996 he was awarded the Clifford C. Snyder Past Chairman Award by the Plastic Surgery Research Council. From 1997-1999 he was awarded the Academic Scholar Award by the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and in 1999 he was awarded the Dr. Bernd Spiess Award by the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons.

As one of the leading researchers in the country, Dr. Longaker currently has over 541 published research articles in a variety of journals such as: Journal of Bone Mineral Research, American Journal of Physiology, Endocrinology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal.
