March 25, 2026
At the 70th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW), Stanford Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery faculty member Dr. Dung Nguyen participated in a panel event titled “Access to Justice in Health: Advancing Breast Reconstruction as a Right, Not a Privilege.” The session was held in partnership with ReSurge International and the University of Global Health Equity.
Dr. Nguyen, Director of Breast Reconstruction at the Stanford Women’s Cancer Center, joined an international group of speakers to discuss access to breast reconstruction in low- and middle-income countries. Panelists examined structural and clinical barriers that limit access, including workforce limitations, infrastructure gaps, and disparities in awareness and policy.
Also speaking at the event was Muthoni C. Mate, an epidemiologist, breast cancer survivor, and founder of The Cancer Café, who shared perspectives on survivorship and access to care.
The panel outlined strategies to expand access to breast reconstruction globally, including increasing surgical training opportunities, strengthening institutional partnerships, and supporting survivor-informed approaches to care delivery.
