STaRS Program Components
Research
Conduct full-time, hands-on research over 8 weeks in the Jill Helms Laboratory at Stanford. Interns gain exposure to cutting-edge techniques and contribute to ongoing projects through lab based experimentation, imaging, and analysis. Share your discoveries in a presentation at the end of the program, attended by faculty, peers, and guests.
Curriculum
Kick off the experience with a collaborative orientation introducing lab techniques, team members, and program goals. Throughout the summer, participate in engaging workshops on topics like histology, immunohistochemistry, scientific communication, and navigating academic paths in STEM and medicine.
Mentorship
Interns receive personalized mentorship from experienced lab mentors, including postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates. Mentors guide interns through both the technical and conceptual aspects of research, fostering a supportive and intellectually curious lab environment.
Community.
Build lasting connections through weekly community-building activities and excursions around the Bay Area. Whether touring the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory or exploring the Stanford campus, these experiences help interns not only gain lasting friendships but also learn the value of community in scientific growth and personal development.
